Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov: Kozloduy NPP Unit 7 and Unit 8: a project of strategic importance for Bulgaria and Southeast Europe

24.03.2025

The construction of Unit 7 and Unit 8 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is a key step towards guaranteeing Bulgaria’s energy security. It is a project of strategic importance both for Bulgaria and for the region of Southeast Europe. This was stated by Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov at his meeting with a Hyundai E&C delegation headed by CEO Hanwoo Lee. The meeting in the Prime Minister’s Office was joined by Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov and Petyo Ivanov, Executive Director of Kozloduy NPP-New Builds.

The new units on the site of the Kozloduy NPP was the focus of today’s meeting in the Council of Ministers following the start of the fulfilment of the engineering contract between Kozloduy NPP-New Builds and the consortium comprising the Bulgarian branches of Westinghouse Energy Systems and Hyundai Engineering and Construction in yearend 2024. The fulfilment of the contract will help the regulatory steps for the implementation of the project and the estimation of the future investment and operating costs.

In the course of today’s discussion, Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov assured that the Bulgarian party would do whatever is needed to speed up the implementation process without any detriment to the quality of the implementation. We attach great importance to safety during the construction and to the safe operation of the units in the future, Mr. Jeliazkov pointed out. The Prime Minister insisted that the project should comply with all national and European rules and standards.
