Prime Minister Kiril Petkov met with US Vice President Kamala Harris in the White House. They discussed the strategic partnership between Sofia and Washington and the opportunities for the promotion of cooperation in the interest of both countries.
The war in Ukraine featured as a major point on the agenda of the Petkov-Harris meeting. Bulgaria’s Prime Minister pointed out that what is ongoing in Europe is a clear sign of the need for speedier and real measures to be taken in the energy sector. Vice President Kamala Harris praised Bulgaria for its resolute action to uphold its energy sovereignty. On his part, Prime Minister Kiril Petkov noted that the Sofia-Washington partnership is an important element of the achievement of Bulgaria’s gas independence, along with the EU solidarity and support. It was agreed to make real liquefied natural gas deliveries to Bulgaria starting in June and at prices lower than the Gazprom prices.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Kiril Petkov talked with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in the Department of State. The Prime Minister and the Secretary of State discussed the opportunities for partnership with the United States for the energy diversification of Bulgaria and the region. Kiril Petkov and Antony Blinken also discussed the modernization of the Bulgarian armed forces and the stability and development of the Western Balkans.
