Prime Minister Kiril Petkov got strong support for Bulgaria’s anticorruption drive at his meetings at the US Department of State in Washington today. The Prime Minister briefed his hosts, high-ranking US officials, on the cabinet’s measures to suppress corruption and on the real steps to carry out a reform of the Judiciary. The Prime Minister’s first talks today focused, inter alia, on the Bulgarian Government’s action to ensure the country’s energy sovereignty and diversification. The Prime Minister stressed the cabinet’s effort to find long-term solutions to ensure the country’s security and stability following the Gazprom’s unilateral shutoff of gas supplies. Kiril Petkov stressed the possible options and the importance of international cooperation, especially with the United States, in energy issues.
The American side welcomed Bulgaria’s support for Ukraine. Prime Minister Kiril Petkov reiterated Bulgaria’s staunch stance on the Russian aggression. Further, the Prime Minister noted Bulgaria’s humanitarian aid to Kyiv and decision to provide military-technical assistance to Ukraine.
At the US Department of State Prime Minister Kiril Petkov met with as follows: Amos Hochstein, Senior Advisor for Energy Security; Victoria Nuland, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs; and James O'Brien, Head of the Office of Sanctions Coordination.
After his meetings at the Department of State, Prime Minister Kiril Petkov visited the White House National Security Council where he met with the National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. In the course of his visit to Washington Prime Minister Kiril Petkov is to have talks in Congress and at the World Bank. Members of the Prime Minister’s delegation for the visit to Washington are: Alexander Nikolov, Minister of Energy; Dragomir Zakov, Minister of Defense; and Velislava Petrova, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affair.
