Today Prime Minister Kiril Petkov held a video conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. They discussed current developments regarding the continuing Russian military buildup along the border with Ukraine.
They shared the view that diplomatic efforts at de-escalation should continue while the Alliance should be prepared for a possible deterioration of the situation.
The Prime Minister informed the Secretary General about the Government’s decision to contribute to collective defense through the recruitment of a Bulgarian battalion unit with a possibility to have the gaps filled in by member countries, if needed. The Prime Minister and the NATO Secretary General reaffirmed the NATO guiding principle that calls for any decision to get the support of the public and of the government in the respective member state.
