Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev: There is no immediate threat to Bulgaria’s national security

At this time, there is no threat to Bulgaria’s national security. All institutions do what is necessary to protect the life and health of Bulgarian citizens. This was stated by Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev after the closing of the Security Council meeting that he had called up. The focus of today’s meeting was the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. The meeting discussed probable risks and the possible countermeasures. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Interior and the special services presented their reports on the goings-on. This is a hotbed of tension that has the power to become a threat to national security, Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev said further.

 

During the meeting, Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev proposed that Bulgaria take a position that calls for de-escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, in tune with the European position on the matter. Minister of Interior Atanas Ilkov, for his part, pointed out that preventive measures had been taken to strengthen the presence of law-enforcement officers in strategic locations in order to guarantee additionally the calm of Bulgarian citizens.

 

Prime Minister Glavchev informed the media that the government would set up a headquarters to monitor the situation in the Middle East continuously so that quick and adequate decisions could be made. The headquarters will be headed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Elena Shekerletova.
