Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev: Key task: fighting capacity, modernization and rearmament of Bulgarian Army

14.11.2024

The fighting capacity, modernization and rearmament of the Bulgarian Army are the key task. It is important for the government’s proactive policy to that effect to continue. This was stated by Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev at the Georgi Benkovski Air Force Academy in Dolna Mitropolia where he attended the formal presentation of the virtual reality system for training for „F-16 Block 70“ and for the two newly supplied „CABRI“ helicopters for the drill of cadets. I am convinced that the next government, whatever the format, will continue this trend, which is a NATO, and global trend, and we will continue with the modernization and rearmament of our army, Mr. Glavchev said further. The Prime Minister emphasized that as a member of NATO, Bulgaria can count on the collective capabilities of the Alliance.

In his answer to a media question about the situation in the National Assembly, Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev was firm: “I will not enter the domain of other institutions; some people feel tempted to do that but my duties as the head of the caretaker government are enough; we will perform our duty as long as needed.” The Prime Minister expressed his hope that politicians would find a common language and a way to a meaningful dialog, start solving the Bulgarian citizens’ problems and form a regular cabinet.

Asked about the Interior Ministry’s report on last week’s incident around the National Theater, Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev said that he expects that the report would be produced within a short period of time and made public.

Regarding the water cuts, the Prime Minister emphasized that he had set up a taskforce to address the problem. Line ministries maintain a nonstop dialog with the local authorities. Part of the solution lies in the replacement of worn and torn water pipes that account for the huge water leakages. As Mr. Glavchev said, it is important that these costs be incorporated into the investment program for local infrastructure projects so that the price is not impacted.

In 2025, the Louda Yana reservoir and its drinking water treatment plant are to go into operation in the region of Panagyurishte. This is the second reservoir for the supply of drinking water built in Bulgaria in the last thirty years. Also, the estimated budget for 2025-2028 accommodates funding for assessment, survey, design and construction and assembly for several reservoirs in the country. These are: the reservoirs Cherni Osum for Pleven and Lovech; Hristo Smirnenski, Byala reservoir for Gabrovo, Sevlievo and Dryanovo and the half-finished Kyustendil dam and the Sliven drinking water treatment plant.
