18.07.2023

Close cooperation in Antarctica has been maintained between Bulgaria and Argentina for more than thirty years now in research and logistics. Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov who had a meeting today in Brussels with Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández expressed Bulgaria’s gratitude for the annual support provided by the Argentine authorities to the Bulgarian Antarctic expeditions. For his part, President Fernández reassured that his country is willing to continue joint activities in Antarctica, fully in tune with the Antarctic Cooperation Agreement as renewed in 2022 between the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and the National Directorate for Antarctic with Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship.

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister and Argentina’s President agreed on the need to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the field of economy, trade, science and people-to-people contacts. “Argentina is a key partner for Bulgaria in South America. Tens of thousands of people of Bulgarian extraction live in that country and are very well integrated,” Acad. Nikolai Denkov said. President Alberto Fernández drew attention to the great potential of economic and trade relations between Buenos Aires and Sofia as well as in the field of science, technology, innovation and agriculture. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of the upcoming first session of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission for Bilateral Economic Cooperation between Bulgaria and Argentina to be held in September 2023 in the capital of Argentina.

Nikolai Denkov attended the second plenary session of the EU-CELAC Summit (the European Union-the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) that opened yesterday in Brussels. In his statement Bulgaria’s Prime Minister stressed the need to promote cooperation with the Latin American and Caribbean states, especially in the context of the climate, political and health challenges that confront the world. He highlighted the growing importance of the countries of the region at times of new threats to peace and stability and to food and economic security. “Bulgaria supports action to strengthen cooperation with partners from Latin America and the Caribbean in key areas such as trade and economy, education, research, culture and innovation,” Acad. Nikolai Denkov said at the forum. He emphasized the education and research exchanges that can be funded by the European programs Erasmus+, Horizon Europe and Marie Skłodowska-Curie.
