The fight against corruption turns into a fight to save democracy. It is no longer a matter of just saving public money or lessening the influence in countries. The issue acquires more global dimensions. This was stated by Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov after his meeting with the European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi. The discussion was joined by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel. The meeting discussed the performance of the European Prosecutor’s Office in Bulgaria and mapped out measures with which the government could help achieve even more visible results.

 

“The mission of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office is very important as it protects the EU common interest. I thank Laura Kövesi for the constructive discussion and the clear message that the meeting sent, namely, that Bulgaria is an EU member state that can set standards,” said Deputy Prime Minister Mariya Gabriel after the meeting.

 

For her part, the European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi underlined the efforts to open an office of the EPPO in Sofia and pointed out that Bulgaria can be cited as a good example.
