The problem in Bulgaria is not freedom of speech for major progress was made in that in the past two years. The main problem in our country is related to misinformation. Standards are needed to check facts. In addition to changes in the Bulgarian legislation, European law can equally help us a lot in that.
Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov stated that when he met representatives of the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in Brussels.
The Prime Minister emphasized the government’s efforts to ensure transparency of media ownership, the journalists’ freedom of expression and the credibility of information. A concrete result to be cited is the passage of the amendments to the Public Procurement Act that were drafted in keeping with the recommendations of the European Commission’s latest annual reports on the rule of law in Bulgaria. A workgroup has been set up at the Ministry of Justice, composed of Ministry experts and experts from other institutions. The workgroup drafts legal changes in line with European and world media standards.
Bulgaria’s Prime Minister and the RSF agreed on the need to establish a long-term partnership.
Bulgaria ranks 71st out of 180 countries in the RSF 2023 World Press Freedom Index. In the past two years, the country moved up through 41 rungs of the “ladder”.
