Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov: It is the duty of the Judiciary to ensure that its moves inspire confidence

20.06.2023

“It is the duty of the Judiciary to ensure that what it does inspires confidence. Developments in recent months have exposed many doings that have further undermined confidence. The members of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) should think about whether currently they are working to recover confidence that justice will reign supreme or whether they are doing as until now.” This statement was the comment of Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov of the current state of the Judiciary for media in Pamporovo. In the Prime Minister’s view, the SJC should select the best people in terms of expertise and moral integrity. “I don’t take upon myself to judge whether the SJC did it,” Acad. Denkov said. He was firm that neither the Executive nor the Legislature should go beyond their vested powers. The SJC takes the decisions. However, each political party, the President included, has the right to express their opinion on the matter.

“Bulgaria must consistently uphold its positions,” the Prime Minister said about the collaborative procurement of ammunition via the European Defense Agency (EDA) for the war in Ukraine. “We must fulfil the National Assembly’s decisions and help Ukraine which is a target of aggression by a neighbor country and struggles to reestablish its territorial integrity,” he said. As he put it, this great human tragedy cannot end unless the war ends and brings about lasting peace. “History has shown that when the peace negotiated is unjust, a war breaks out again,” Acad. Denkov said further.

Regarding the European Commission’s official request that Bulgaria submit two nominations for a European Commissioner, the Prime Minister expects that the two parliamentary groups that support the government will duly proceed with that. Meanwhile, the cabinet continues to look for names on which a consensus can be reached across party lines to be appointed as regional governors.
